In February 2012, the Russian feminist art collective Pussy Riot uploaded their punk prayer, “Virgin Mary, Chase Putin Away!” to the internet as an act of political protest.  They recorded the video at the altar of Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral–where women are still forbidden.  The world took notice–and so did the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church–and eventually the group’s members were arrested and tried for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.”  Pussy Riot rapidly became the focal point for artist activists the world around fighting for equality and justice for all people.
