Machinal
Written by Sophie Treadwell
Directed by Marion Frank
A young woman feels trapped in her everyday existence. The mechanized rote functions of capitalism have left her desperate– so she agrees to marry a man who frightens her. But being a wife and mother is a prison of its own. Seeking any frantic method of reaching freedom, she makes mistake after mistake, and pays the ultimate price. Through the use of expressionistic style, Sophie Treadwell’s adaptive retelling of a true story highlights the oppression that comes from a capitalist society which devalues human lives.
