Theatre Advisory Board
The Theatre Advisory Board (TAB) is a group of students appointed by the faculty that oversee and coordinate productions in Studio Theatre.
TAB consists of students nominated by students and appointed by the theatre faculty in order to facilitate productions in Studio Theatre and some aspects of Harbach Theatre productions. The students appointed to TAB serve as Production Manager(s); Publicity Coordinator(s); Technical Director(s); Wardrobe Supervisor(s); New Plays Workshop Coordinator(s). Students intent on directing productions in Studio Theatre submit applications to TAB, which are reviewed for feasibility and balance. TAB then makes recommendations to the faculty, who make the final determinations. TAB confers regularly with the faculty to set the season, assure that Studio Theatre Productions are operating smoothly, and coordinate auditions each term.
TAB meets regularly and makes its agenda and minutes available to all students on the Theatre email distribution list. Additionally, all TAB meetings are open to the student body and especially invites the student body to attend the first meeting of the year to share information and hear new ideas. TAB reviews the weekly production meeting reports from each Studio Theatre production to assure that each production has what it needs and is on track, considers and reviews policy for operations in Studio Theatre, and makes recommendations to the faculty as needed.
TAB also offers workshops to help to develop production skills requisite to making theatre, such as:
- “Tool Time,” where students about to embark on a production learn how to use the tools that will be employed during a production build or strike
- “Stage Management,” where experienced Stage Managers review the standard responsibilities of an SM as they play out on both student directed and faculty directed productions
- “Marketing,” where students may learn about how the department of theatre markets productions through print and social media
- “Stage Readings,” where students or faculty review how to direct and act in a stage reading
- “Applying to Direct,” where TAB members review how to fill out a directing application form, expectations for directing, the roles of the production team, discuss ideas for how to find play options, and best practices for success in Studio Theatre.
